Muesli

July 31, 2019 By Jen

A mason jar of muesli garnished with apple, coconut, and blueberry.

Apples, nuts, seeds, coconut, and milk.

The memory is fresh.

Close to five years of life circumstance comes to an end. In that time, grief devoured my appetite. At a table in Alaska, I watch my family enjoy their breakfast. A bowl of oat-like mush sits to my upper left.

Intrigued, I ask “What’s that Roger?”

“It’s Muesli” he replies.

Still blank, but lucky to be opposite my encyclopedia uncle, he explains.

Strawberry filling with a backdrop of strawberries and flowers

Many years ago, a pie called for a fresh fruit filling. In learning how fast and easy it is to make, my world shifted. Our version is low in sugar, but high in flavor.

A Rhubarb Pie with a lattice crust and a backdrop of vanilla beans, flowers, and pinecones

/ You were a mystery. Big, bold, beautiful but oh so bitter. You were one I couldn’t, didn’t want to lend time or understanding. But then someone we care deeply for cared deeply for you. So because he cared, we did too.

Eggs Over Pea Shoots & Sweet Potato

July 12, 2019 By Jen

An over medium egg on top of pea shoots and sweet potato hash with orange juice in the upper left corner.

I’m a sucker for a yolk that coats then saturates.

Chocolate Chip Cookies (High Altitude)

July 9, 2019 By Jen

A stack of three chocolate chip cookies next to a glass of milk.

At an altitude of 6300, Chocolate Chip Cookies had their way with me. Oatmeal, sugar, gingersnap, they are kinder. I kid you not, chocolate chip was one tough cookie. Why? I’m unsure. But after many years, I’m cartwheeling because I finally got Chip’s digits.

Patriotic Pie – Red Raspberry, White Cream Cheese, Blue Berry

July 2, 2019 By Jen

A whole cream cheese pie with strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry garnish and American flag in the background.

/ Fourth of July in Tahoe. People come from around the globe to fill our streets, stores, and beaches. As day turns to night, fireworks light our beloved lake. From childhood until now, unwritten traditions continue: the smell of barbecue, crisp summer nights, walking the woods, animals and critters roaming the forest, driving music up windows…

Warm Artichoke Olive Feta Sandwich

June 28, 2019 By Jen

An Artichoke Olive Feta Sandwich on a decorative cutting board

Ann Arbor Michigan. My friend and I sit, eyes locked. Between munching, we utter short and similar sentences, “Oh my gosh. This is the best sandwich.” While flavors pop, weave and linger, the crunch is undeniable. What on earth lies between these two pieces of olive bread? I need to know.

Hello and Welcome!

In these pages you’ll find vegetable dishes to savor and sustain along with dessert recipes to gather around or share with neighbors, co-workers, or anyone in need of extra love.

A word on altitude, I’ve cooked and baked at both sea level and in Lake Tahoe. Many recipes aren’t affected by elevation, but if they are, I’m sure to note the difference within the ingredients.

We love to share, so thank you for stopping by because along with my husband Dave and our dog Rainey, each recipe is a thrill and therapy in creation. I hope the feeling comes through in every post and especially bite.
