Verde Pozole – Vegetarian/Vegan

May 22, 2019 By Jen

A bowl of Verde Pozole in a white bowl with hominy garnish on a slate background

I returned home to Tahoe and started working at the high school I attended soon after. By November the snow flew. Girls bundled in hoodies, puffies, and Vans. In sickness or snow, their hands wrapped thermoses. The contents – Pozole.

Coconut Cream Pie on a placemat then on a coffee table

Before coconut, I was lost. And so were the legions of others who initially denied this sweet baby.

Vegetable Stuffed Red Pepper Soup – Instant Pot

May 14, 2019 By Jen

A bowl of Vegetable Stuffed Red Pepper Soup on a green stripped napkin and wood tray.

Whoa; hold up Spring. Five snows and four rains. When seeing these heavenly symbols, Dave and I act like kids at Christmas. While apart and to a sick degree, we text the forecast back and forth. I’ve noticed something strange about living in Tahoe. People moan about the snow. A silent reminder, “you live in…

Spiced Cherry Berry Pie

May 9, 2019 By Jen

A spiced cherry berry pie on a grey and white napkin with a bowl full of berries to the upper right

Berries and I have a checkered past. When first making pie, I battled them. A harsh lesson loosened my grip and delivered a realization, control is an illusion. But then I’d make a berry pie. Out with the phrase and in walked the control freak. I wouldn’t bat an eye at the monumental, but the…

Avi Pie without a pie? Mother’s Day is the perfect week for pie. How is Mother’s Day for you? The day used to be only good. As time passed, the day changed. Now there’s pain too. Quiet in our home for one becomes quieter. To combat the still, I divert my attention on the mother I…

Chilaquiles Verde

May 4, 2019 By Jen

I dive head first into the skillet and declare, “chilaquiles are my favorite Mexican dish!” The crunchy texture upon coated layers grab me by the tastebud and once again remind “we’re easy to make too.” And they are.

Green Onion Guacamole

May 1, 2019 By Jen

Have I been hiding under a rock? Before January 13th of this year, I’d never heard of such a recipe. I thought I’d been hip to every iteration of guacamole. Is this the song thing? Someone asks, “have you heard the new Alabama Shakes song?” You hadn’t, but now “Joe” plays in the gym, the…

Salsa Verde

April 30, 2019 By Jen

Close up of salsa verde with chips and cilantro garnish

My whole life I was red, you were green. I remember the first time. A day wake boarding on the brown murky of Camp Far West. My head splitting from a migraine. Freddy (who to his family goes by Raul, so if we call, they have no idea whom we’re speaking of) was cooking, which is…

Rainey Day Birthday

April 24, 2019 By Jen

Today you are nine. The truth is, you may already be nine. We chose April 24th as your birthday. Like many other days of the year, I look deep into the brown of your eyes and remember the first time we met.

Hello and Welcome!

In these pages you’ll find vegetable dishes to savor and sustain along with dessert recipes to gather around or share with neighbors, co-workers, or anyone in need of extra love.

A word on altitude, I’ve cooked and baked at both sea level and in Lake Tahoe. Many recipes aren’t affected by elevation, but if they are, I’m sure to note the difference within the ingredients.

We love to share, so thank you for stopping by because along with my husband Dave and our dog Rainey, each recipe is a thrill and therapy in creation. I hope the feeling comes through in every post and especially bite.
