How many layers? I’m unsure.
What I do know is each stand alone,
Then unite for one incredible Game Day Dip.
Is your team in or out? Are you Super Bowl hot, lukewarm, or could care less? My team’s in, I’m can’t miss a play ecstatic, am making lots of food, and keep singing this childhood throwback.
I like a good dip and believe no layer shall be left, as in… make every count.
One: A foundation of Smashed Black Beans/Instant Pot Style, oh yeah! Or, tasty canned refried beans, then add garlic, green chilis, cumin, and chili powder. Or not.
Two: Add Cadillac or Green Onion guacamole or serve on the side.
Three: Yogurt mixed with lime juice, minced garlic, paprika, onion and chili powder. Taco seasoning can be used in place of the above seasonings too!
Four: Two kinds of block cheese. Fine or thick shred, your choice. To me, block and fresh shred cheese is a main difference in “the best layer dip!”
Five: Romaine lettuce makes a layer dip fresh! Cut thin, chop across into bite size, then pat dry. Oooh, the crisp!
Six, Seven, Eight, Nine – cilantro, red and green onion (wanna kiss?), sliced black olives, and Roma or grape tomatoes.
The answer is Nine Layers of fresh.
When I Dip You Dip We Dip
– Chips –
My dad raised me to serve and appreciate a sturdy dip chip. I take that knowledge, apply, but add my own spin. I also like semi-stable, broken chips, and especially crumbs!
Favorites include:
Sturdy – Casa Sanchez
Semi-Stable, Ultra Staple, Best Crumbs – Late July Sea Salt Multigrain
Trader Joe’s (never liked a blue chip until these bad boys).
Non-Chips
Carrot chips (look how fast I turned that into a chip).
Sliced carrots.
Celery sticks.
Pita bread.
What else can we dip ; )
For whom else does Layer Dip grace? Any party people, or make for two or one too.
Kobe, Gianna, Tony, Keri, Alyssa, Christina, Sarah, Payton, and Ara.
I don’t know these people but throughout my good day, feel somber for the remaining family’s worst. For last words and personal items last touched and left just so. For warps of time—stretched and flashing days, weeks, months, and years. For the guillotine cut of who they were and who they’ve become. For the concise understanding of what and who are imperative, the rest—gravy. For the kids left parent and sibling-less. For loss of every kind. Life can be cruel, but never does beauty rise most, but during pain. A dichotomy making one pause, then hopefully softening the edge and acting in memory, honor, with love, and to survive.

Homemade Layer Dip
Ingredients:
- 1¾ cups or 15 oz. can smashed black bean recipe or canned refried beans
Yogurt Layer
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ¼-½ teaspoon chili powder
- ¼-½ teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 fresh lime - squeezed
Remaining Layers
- 1/2 cup shredded block cheese (two kinds)
- 1/3 cup romaine lettuce - 1/4" cut, chop across into bite size, then pat dry
- 1 roma tomato (or 1/2 cup grape tomatoes) - diced or quarter cut
- 1/4 cup sliced black olives
- 1/4 cup cilantro - chopped
- 1/4 cup red onion - small sliced
- 2 Tablespoons green onion
Instructions
- Spread smashed or refried beans over a plate or 9" serving dish.
- In a small bowl, mix yogurt, minced garlic, onion powder, chili powder, paprika, and lime juice. Spread over smashed or refried beans.
- If serving guacamole in the layer dip, spread on top of the yogurt mix.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese, romaine lettuce, diced or quartered tomatoes, sliced black olives, cilantro, and onion over the top.
- Cover, refrigerate, and enjoy once served!
Notes
- Two teaspoons taco seasoning can be used in place of onion powder, chili powder, and paprika.
- This dip can be made a day in advance; some layers are better the next day, some are best day of. As always, the choice is yours! But if making day before, may want to avoid romaine lettuce.
- The recipe serves approximately ten and can be multiplied based on party people.
- Serve with tortilla or pita chips and celery or carrot sticks.
